My name is Danni, I was born and raised in China, briefly lived in Japan before moving to the US. I currently live in NYC and work as a programmer.
I turned 24 at the end of 2014, around the same time I received Essure permanent sterilization. So now at the age of 24, I’ve never had children and will never be able to have children – and I’m really happy with that.
The most questions I was asked, including what if I regret in the future, or what if my boyfriend wants kids. I actually don’t know how people came up with these questions.
About boyfriend: the guy that can become my boyfriend, of course doesn’t want kids just as much as I do, or even more! Guys that think they’ll marry and have many kids, I don’t even go on dates with them.
And about what if I regret: this study (Sterilization in the United States) found that up to 26 percent of female patients that went through sterilization say later that they regret the procedure, according to statistics cited in the study. That means only 26% later regretted, so that means most women are happily sterilized. Also there are plenty of girls who have given birth to their children at the age or younger than 24. If someone is mature enough to make the decision to have children, then someone should also be mature enough to decide to never have children – it is essentially the same decision.

Good for you, girl! I think that if women are old enough to have kids, then we are also old enough to decide we don’t want kids. I think that our choices should be celebrated, because we’re doing what makes us happy.

I bet more than 26% of mothers regret having kids at least some of the time >:-D …they probably edited the responses of women who occasionally regret their decision into just “regret”, and it’s likely they threw out some “no regrets” too because this is the way science is now -.-

I just got Essure last wednesday. How was the procedure for you? Did they put you under anesthetic or were you awake? Did you have any pain afterwards, and if so, how long did it last? And did you go back to your doctor after the 3 months to make sure your tubes were blocked? If so, how uncomfortable was that?

I had my procedure under general anesthesia (it was a Friday), and when I woke up I didn’t feel any pain, just light headed because of the anesthesia. My doctor had also given me prescriptions of Ibuprofen and Oxycodone to take every 4 to 6 hours, so with those pills, I barely felt any pain or discomfort. I had some bleeding on the day of and a couple days after the procedure, but not heavy. The nurse said I need to use pads instead of tampons for the bleeding, so my boyfriend went to bought a pack for me, and I didn’t use all of them. I rested for the rest of the day on Friday and most of the time stayed in bed on Saturday, and on Sunday I went to the gym (no cardio, just some strength training and yoga), and on Monday I went back to work.
I had a follow up with my doctor 2 weeks after my procedure, it was just for a check up to see if I still felt pain and if I needed more prescription.
Then I had my confirmation test earlier this month (about the same time I started this blog!), it was just like other gynecology exams that feels a little weird. My doctor inserted a tube and put a dye into my fallopian tubes, then take x-rays to see if the tubes are fully blocked. It was quick and I got a call later that my insertion was very successful 🙂 You’ll probably experience some cramps like I did, but some over-the-counter medicine can help. And you’ll also get a card like an insurance card that says you have essure coils inserted in case of an MRI. Good luck and please take a lot of rest 🙂
